This Day in Kings Island History: Banshee makes its highly anticipated debut 

One of the most anticipated opening days in Kings Island’s history took place on April 18, 2014, when the world’s longest steel inverted roller coaster, Banshee, made its debut. Kings Island hadn’t attracted this much attention leading up to the start of the season for a new ride since 1979 when The Beast – still the world’s longest wooden roller coaster at 7,359 feet – opened. Hundreds of roller coaster enthusiasts throughout the United States, Canada and Europe made plans to travel to Southwest Ohio and visit Kings Island specifically to experience the record-breaking ride.

The Beast was officially, and quite appropriately, “unchained” in a steady downpour 39 years ago on Friday, April 13, 1979, for hundreds of media representatives from around the U.S. and Great Britain. The Beast being unleashed garnered international attention with news of the 7,359-foot-long coaster traveling as far away as China, Germany, Japan, Switzerland and Russia.

When one of Kings Island’s most popular attractions debuted on April 11, 1987, it set a new world’s record by turning riders upside-down a total of six times in two and one-half minutes. Over 44.3 million guests have experienced the Vortex since its debut, the seventh-most in park history and sixth among active rides.

This Day in Kings Island History: Mystic Timbers takes first test run

Late in the afternoon, on March 20 last year, with a spring chill drifting up from the Little Miami River, engineers, technicians, construction workers, park managers, general manager and other involved people, watched as the Mystic Timbers roller coaster car sat in the station on the untested tracks. The first test run of Mystic Timbers, Kings Island’s 16th roller coaster, was ready to begin.
